What to Expect during Implant Placement

The process of implant placement varies depending on how many dental implants you need. You can ask our oral surgeon if you have any questions. Here at Midwest Oral Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery, our patients always come first. We're dedicated to exceptional service and personable care. Keep reading to learn more about the process of dental implant placement and what you can expect during your appointment.

How Many Implants Do I Need?

One implant is placed for each missing tooth. The size of the implant will vary depending on the missing tooth being replaced. For example, a larger back tooth will be replaced with a larger implant. If you are missing several teeth, we can provide you with a customized solution.

What To Expect During the Surgical Procedure

The implant placement procedure takes roughly 30 minutes to one hour for a single implant, but just two to three hours for numerous implants. Your doctor can tell you more specifically how much time you should expect the procedure to take, and how many appointments will be required, as these factors differ between patients.

Before the procedure, as discussed during your consultation, your doctor may administer:

  • Antibiotics
  • Intravenous sedation or
  • Laughing gas / nitrous oxide
  • Local anesthetic

Your doctor will make a tiny incision in your gum tissue that reveals the bone. Using highly specialized tools, he / she will then insert the titanium implant. The top of the implant may be visible emerging through your gum. During the early stages of healing, it can be better for the gum tissue to conceal the implant.

Post-Procedure: The Healing Phase

The length of the healing phase is another factor that differs from patient to patient. Some patients will experience immediate restoration of the implant post-placement. Others will see more gradual healing. Your doctor will tell you what to expect after your procedure, and how to ensure proper care. You will come back to the doctor's office for placement of a healing cap or support post / abutment on the implant, which facilitates gum tissue maturation and accessibility for the doctor.

A total of one to four appointments may be necessary between the surgical procedure and the crown placement. Every patient heals at different rates. Some patient require soft tissue grafts around the implant, which can be completed in a brief procedure. Some patients may even require bone grafting if they are missing bone in their jaw after tooth extraction. Once you have healed, the replacement tooth or "crown" will be fitted to the dental implant.
